Family (And Budget!) Friendly Spring Break on the Outer Banks

Spring on the Outer Banks; the weather is warming up, local businesses are re-opening their doors, and rental rates are low, making it the perfect time for a trip to your favorite beachside destination.

If you’re looking to enjoy a budget-friendly spring break on the Outer Banks, we’ve come up with a list of activities you & your family are sure to enjoy!

If you’re into locally made goods…
Check out the Island Art Show March 30th at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Center in the northern villages of Hatteras Island. Locally-made goods from over 20 local Outer Banks artists & crafters who will be showing and selling their work – everything from fine local art & prints to woodworks, sea glass jewelry, handmade bath & body products, surf art, photography and more. Admission to the event is FREE; held from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

If you’re a foodie…
You’ll definitely want to check out the Annual Outer Banks ‘Taste of The Beach’ weekend, a fantastic way to sample the fare of many fine restaurants on the Outer Banks in one fun-filled, food-centric weekend! Held March 22nd-March 25th, local favorites include the chowder cookoff and the Duck tapas crawl! Click here for details and to buy tickets!

Kids will love…
The Dare County Parks & Rec annual Easter EGGstravaganza, held on March 24th from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Activities include face painting, egg spoon races, egg toss, sack races, bean bag toss, ring toss, sidewalk decorating, crafts, and pictures with the Easter Bunny – all FREE!

Kids will be thrilled to check out the new Dowdy Park at the Nags Head Police Department’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt on March 31st! From 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, this free event will also feature safety personnel with their equipment, including fire engines and police cars!

Hop on over to the Elizabethan Gardens on Roanoke Island March 31st for an “Easter Eggstravaganza!” This event has become an Outer Banks spring tradition held in the midst of the beautiful spring blooms featuring an egg scavenger hunt, photo opportunities, a homemade bake sale, egg roll on the Great Lawn, story time, educational crafts, games, music, an Easter bonnet and hat contest, and more kid-geared fun. One Child (under 5) admitted free with each paying adult (non-members.) This event is free for members/friends. Held from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. If you’re a history buff…
From March 26-April 7, The Lost Colony will be presenting an interactive theatrical experience! Join a team of ghost hunters on an adventure, exploring paranormal hotspots in the Waterside Theatre and Fort Raleigh National Park. Dare to enter the last documented location of Sir Walter Raleigh’s “lost colony!” Tickets are $20; find for more information here.

If you haven’t checked out the Wright brothers National Memorial, take a trip to Kill Devil Hills and climb Big Kill Devil Hill to see the nation’s monument commemorating the brothers’ historic achievement! Find more information here.

If you’re a nature lover…
The Elizabethan Gardens’ Butterfly Festival runs from April 1-30 and is free with admission. Enjoy educational booths and demonstrations, as well as lots of activities for butterfly enthusiasts and families. The month-long festival also includes special events, crafts, food, gardening information, an up-close experience with butterflies and much more.
