Paul McDevitt was a Marines, Marine, a devoted husband and father, and beloved member of the rugby and veteran communities. Paul served our nation with pride in the United States Marine Corps to include a combat tour in the first Gulf War. Paul brought that same discipline, loyalty, and camaraderie to every corner of his life. After his service, Paul continued to lead by example in his community, especially on and around the rugby pitch.
Paul’s rugby journey was lifelong. He played at Northern Arizona University, Cherry Point, North Jersey (NoJo), Morris Rugby, and for the revered Marine Corps Old Breed Rugby Club. His love for the game was infectious and deeply rooted in the values he lived by; Brotherhood, Toughness, and Humility. Whether he was the on-field leader playing with the Old Breed or coaching youth rugby and his oldest son, Tommy, on a muddy and rainy Saturday morning-Paul gave everything he had. He was more than a coach, he was a mentor, role model and an example for all.
He was a cornerstone of Morris Rugby, where he had the opportunity to not just coach his sons but coach the High School team to (2) State Championships. His integrity and honor were without reproach and was asked to serve as a trustee for Morris Rugby and to be a voice of reason for the Old Breed. He was also active in Morris Masters and Touch Rugby, always showing up with grit, humor, and that unmistakable McDevitt charm.
But Paul’s proudest roles were off the field. He was a devoted husband to Julia McDevitt, and Father to Thomas (Tommy), Padraig (PJ), and Daniel (Danimal/Danny). Thomas now plays rugby in college, PJ straps on the rugby boots on occasion and Danny laces the rugby boots up for his high school team in NJ, proudly carrying on the McDevitt legacy. Paul didn’t just teach the game of rugby, he passed down a mindset: lead from the front, show up for your teammates, and do everything with heart. This spirit has manifested itself in his young boys who were 15, 13 and 10 when he passed.
Since Paul left us on July 4, 2021, his impact has continued to echo through all that he touched in his life. His memory lives on through Julia, his (3) boys, The Old Breed Rugby community, The Paul McDevitt Memorial Cup, the Paul McDevitt Leadership Award, the McDevitt cornhole tournament and in the stories, laughs, and values shared by those who knew him and continue to love him.
Paul represented the best of us whether on the battlefield, on the rugby pitch, or in life. This Memorial Day, we remember and salute him not only for his military service but for the legacy of leadership, love, and loyalty he left behind.
